Harvesting Malvasia (1895), Joaquim de Miró

A woman in a white blouse and colorful skirt sits on a chair in a vineyard, tending a basket. A black jug rests on a nearby wooden surface. Two figures are seen working among the vines in the background.

It is one of the eleven canvases painted in 1895 to decorate the walls of the old Cau Ferrat Brewery, located on Passeig de la Ribera in Sitges. Its author, the self-taught painter Joaquim de Miró (Sitges, 1849-1914), was one of the members of the Luminista School of Sitges. His colorful and detailed work is characterized by the embodiment of everyday scenes and the local landscape. In this case, Joaquim de Miró represented a common scene at harvest time in a town where, until that moment, the cultivation, production and marketing of malvasia wine had been one of the pillars of the local economy.
